Ron Rivera is the defensive minded head coach of the Carolina Panthers of the NFL. He attended the University of California as a linebacker where in his senior season he was a consensus All-American. After leaving the Golden Bears, where he held the record for all-time sacks and tackles at one point, he was drafted into the NFL by the Chicago Bears. Rivera went on to play for the Bears for 9 seasons, helping the team to a Super Bowl victory in 1985. After his retirement in 1992, Rivera went on to begin a coaching career in the NFL. He began with his former team before moving up the ranks as the linebackers coach for the Eagles and then was hired as the defensive coordinator for the Bears. Rivera then moved to San Diego as a linebackers coach for the Chargers, and was promoted to defensive coordinator for the team in 2008. In 2011, Rivera was given his first opportunity at head coaching when he was hired by the Carolina Panthers. He was named AP’s NFL Coach of the Year in 2013 and 2015.
